Questions we get about pine tree removal
Should I take down the pines behind my house?
Not automatically. A straight, healthy loblolly with a full crown and no root heave is usually fine. The ones to worry about are leaning toward a target, showing soil movement at the base, carrying a lot of dead limbs, or standing alone after their neighbors were cut — a pine that grew up in a stand loses its wind protection when the stand is thinned.
Why do pines fall over instead of breaking?
Shallow roots in heavy clay. Loblollies put most of their roots in the top 18 inches of soil, and Cecil clay saturates in winter and holds water for weeks. The root plate lifts as one piece and the whole tree goes — which is why so many pines came down in the Helene remnants after Debby had already soaked the ground.
How do I know if my pine has beetles?
Popcorn-sized pitch tubes on the bark, fine reddish sawdust in the crevices and at the base, and needles turning yellow and then rust-red from the top down. By the time the crown is red the tree is dead. Call quickly — beetles move to the next pine.
Can you leave the wood?
Yes. Pine makes decent shoulder-season firewood once it's seasoned, and it's fine for outdoor fire pits. We'll cut it to rounds and stack it where you want it. It also chips into good mulch for beds.
Do I need a permit to remove pines in Concord?
For pines in your own yard on an existing single-family lot, in our experience, no. If the pines are part of a required buffer or tree-save area on a subdivision plat, or in the street right-of-way, the answer changes — we check the plat and the code before we cut.
