University City is northeast Charlotte — the area around UNC Charlotte, University Research Park and the north end of the LYNX Blue Line, bounded roughly by I-85, I-485 and the Cabarrus County line. It's where Concord and Charlotte grow into each other: Highland Creek straddles the line, and the neighborhoods along Mallard Creek Road, Prosperity Church Road and Harris Boulevard were built in the same 1980s-to-2000s waves as the Concord subdivisions next door, with the same willow oaks, loblolly pines and Bradford pears.
The difference is the rules. Charlotte's tree ordinance protects trees in the public right-of-way and regulates tree removal on commercial and multifamily property, with the city's Urban Forestry staff involved; single-family homeowners have more freedom in their own yards, but the right-of-way strip between the sidewalk and the street is the city's, and the heritage trees on developed sites are protected. We work under those rules every week.

Does Charlotte require a permit to remove a tree in my yard?
For a tree inside your own single-family lot, generally no. Charlotte's tree ordinance regulates the public right-of-way — the strip between the sidewalk and the curb is the city's, and those trees can't be removed or pruned without the city — and it regulates commercial and multifamily sites, including protected heritage trees. We check the lot line and the ordinance before we quote.
