Huntersville is Mecklenburg County, but for a tree crew based in Concord it's a fifteen-minute drive down Highway 73, and a big share of our work is there. The town has some of the best-planned newer communities in the region — Birkdale Village, Vermillion, Rosedale, Wynfield, the Skybrook and Christenbury side that straddles the Cabarrus line — and they were planted with real street trees in the late 1990s and 2000s that are now big enough to need real pruning. It also has a town tree ordinance that requires developers to preserve and plant trees, which means a lot of HOA-owned buffers and street trees that have to be maintained rather than removed.
West of I-77 the ground drops toward Lake Norman, and the tree rules change again: any lot that touches the lake is inside Duke Energy's shoreline buffer, where cutting is limited by zone and violations can cost you your dock permit. Questions from Huntersville homeowners
Does Huntersville require a permit to remove a tree?
The town's tree-preservation rules are aimed at development and at the trees required by an approved plan — buffers, street trees, tree-save areas. A homeowner removing a tree in the yard of an existing single-family home generally isn't permitting it, but if the tree is in a required buffer on your plat or in the town right-of-way, the answer changes. We check before we cut.
What can I cut on my Lake Norman lot?
Inside Duke Energy's shoreline buffer there's a 50-foot zone from full pond with limits by band: the first 10 feet is essentially untouchable, from 10 to 30 feet you can thin no more than half the trees over 5 inches, and from 30 to 50 feet you can remove trees but must keep ground cover. Dead, diseased and hazard trees can be removed, and lower limbs up to 3 inches can be pruned without permission. Cut more than that and you can lose your dock permit for years. Can you prune the trees the HOA owns along our street?
Only with the association's authorization. We work for several Huntersville boards on annual plans and we're happy to give the manager a proposal.
How much does tree removal cost in Huntersville?
